CEO commentary by Mike McMorris
Having read half of the book so far, I highly recommend Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake. This is an eye-opening entry to the world of fungi.
Humans tend to focus on bigger things and see them as individuals. There is another, very entangled, world beneath us connected by mycelium (whose fruit we see as mushrooms). The possibilities for fungus to be incorporated into our daily lives in the coming years are incredible, including for the livestock sector. The key is to be open to the possibilities that they offer.
On a related note, I was interviewed recently about mRNA vaccines for livestock. This is an emerging opportunity that could have significant positive impact on our sector. The use of vaccines (small things) has implications that are also highly entangled. Vaccines will be an ever more important tool in the kit as we build on the importance of livestock to the economy, environment and food security. They impact animal welfare, farmer profitability, robust rural communities and food security (in Canada via price and internationally via exports).
The future is bright if we stay open to the possibilities!
