Driving cross sector research
CEO Commentary by Mike McMorris
Each year, LRIC, along with tremendous support from Grand River Agricultural Society, Western Fair District, Ontario Agricultural College and Ontario Veterinary College presents our Early Career Research Award.
A key objective of the award is to encourage research that deals with issues on a cross-sector basis.
This award is open for competition to young researchers who have participated in LRIC’s Early Career Mentorship program. Twenty faculty at the University of Guelph have participated in this program over the past four years and all have built meaningful relationships with key people in the livestock sector, setting them up for successful and impactful research into the future.
This year, the award was split to recognize tremendous work by two individuals. Dr Ataharul Chowdhury is focusing his efforts on enhancing GRIP (Getting Research into Practice) and looks in particular at the role of misinformation and the potential use of artificial intelligence.
Dr. Sam Workenhe, a second time winner of the award, is focused on development of antivirals an increasingly important area of research considering viral threats. Drs. Chowdhury and Workenhe received $70,000 and $40,000 respectively to continue their important work.
